M4A vs MP3: what’s the difference?
They are both compressed audio files, but M4A uses a newer, more efficient codec than MP3. That makes M4A a little smaller or a little better-sounding — while MP3 remains the format that plays absolutely everywhere.
What are M4A and MP3, really?
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) arrived in the early 1990s and became the sound of the internet. It is a lossy format: it throws away audio detail your ears are least likely to notice, which is how a song shrinks from ~40 MB (as WAV) to ~4 MB.
M4A is not really a codec at all — it is an MP4 container that usually holds AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), the successor to MP3. (Confusingly, an M4A can also hold Apple Lossless, but the ones you meet from iTunes, Apple Music downloads and iPhone Voice Memos are AAC.) AAC was designed to fix MP3’s weaknesses, and at low bitrates especially it sounds noticeably cleaner.
Which one sounds better?
At the same bitrate, AAC generally sounds better than MP3 — the difference is clearest at low bitrates (96–128 kbps), where MP3 starts to sound harsh on cymbals and vocals while AAC holds together. By around 256 kbps both are effectively transparent (indistinguishable from the original) to most listeners on most gear.

So why would you convert M4A to MP3?
Compatibility. Some older car stereos, cheap MP3 players, gym equipment, DJ software and embedded devices only read MP3. If a file will not play somewhere, converting the M4A to MP3 almost always fixes it. You lose a sliver of efficiency, but a file that plays beats a file that sounds 2% better and does not.

Frequently asked questions
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Not exactly. AAC is the codec (the compression); M4A is the file/container that holds it. Almost every M4A you encounter contains AAC audio, so in practice people use the terms interchangeably.
Does converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?
A little, because you are re-compressing already-compressed audio. Keep the MP3 bitrate at 192 kbps or higher and the loss is very hard to hear. Converting the other way (MP3 to M4A) does not restore anything the MP3 already discarded.
Why is my iPhone recording an M4A?
Apple uses AAC-in-M4A as its default for Voice Memos and recordings because it is efficient. Convert it to MP3 if you need to share it with software or a device that will not open M4A.
Is M4A smaller than MP3?
At the same perceived quality, usually yes — AAC is more efficient, so it needs fewer bits. At the same bitrate the files are roughly the same size, but the M4A will sound a touch better.
Can I play M4A on Windows or Android?
Usually yes — modern Windows and Android both support AAC/M4A. The exceptions are older devices and some third-party apps, which is the main reason to convert to MP3.
