FLAC — the Free Lossless Audio Codec — runs that same PCM data through lossless compression. It models the waveform and stores the difference, the way a ZIP archive shrinks a document without deleting a word. Decode a FLAC and you get back the identical samples, bit for bit. MP3 works differently and more aggressively: a psychoacoustic model decides which sounds a human ear will mask or miss, and it discards them permanently. That loss is why MP3 files are a fraction of the size, and why you can never fully rebuild the original from one.

When should you use MP3?
Reach for MP3 whenever the file has to be small, portable, or shared with someone whose device you do not control. It is the most universally supported audio format on Earth — every phone, browser, car stereo and cheap speaker plays it without a second thought. At a sensible bitrate the loss is genuinely hard to hear on most equipment.

On phone speakers, laptop speakers or cheap earbuds, almost never — a 256 or 320 kbps MP3 is indistinguishable to most people.
